Book Review: Below A Cerise Sky by Mark Sullivan

Based on the truthful merely fictionalized story of Pino Lella, Below a Cherry-red Sky by Mark Sullivan is set in Milan, Italia, and its countryside during the final two years of the Second World War. Pino is a young man caught upwardly in his ain dreams. While the war ravages all over Europe and took a price of human lives, the city of Milan was at-home and composed though the drumbeats of state of war were growing louder. One nighttime as he and his younger brother were in a cinema, the uneasy calm was shattered when the metropolis was bombed. Pino'southward life was completely changed, along with those of his dear ones, including Anna.

"Past opening our hearts, revealing our scars, we are made human and flawed and whole."

Equally a seventeen year erstwhile, he guided Jews over the Alps into Switzerland, working with Father Luigi Re who ran a schoolhouse for boys in northern Italy. When Pine reached the draftable age of eighteen during the High german occupation, he had to enlist in either the Italian Fascist Army or the German Ground forces. His parents fabricated him join the High german Army since it had a lower mortality charge per unit (The Italian Ground forces was being sent to fight in Russia). Pine just savage into the job of existence the personal driver of Nazi General Hans Leyers later he helped set his car.

Full general Leyers was in charge of the Organisation Todt (OT) in Italy that congenital fortifications with slave labor, stole food, and manufactured everything from uniforms to weapons. Pino became a spy for the Allies, reporting on General Leyers' activities and risking his life again. Fluent in several languages, Pino also acted every bit an interpreter for the General which gave him more admission to important information.

"The earth did not know war, nature would go on no affair what horror 1 homo might inflict on some other. Nature didn't care a bit well-nigh men and their demand to kill and conquer."

Author Mark Sullivan crafted an absorbing tale of love, undercover work and honey his land that beats within the heart of Pino Lella. Though a minor player in the story, Pino'due south younger brother Mimo is an unforgettable character. And so there is the beautiful and vivacious Anna without whom the story wouldn't have been what it is. Brimming with details virtually the Earth War II from first-hand sources, Marker Sullivan's Beneath a Scarlet Sky is a well-researched story of a immature man who dreamed the impossible and made it possible in his ain simple ways.

"how can you survive what life throws at you if yous cannot laugh and honey, and are they non the same matter?"

Pino Lella remained quiet for threescore years almost his state of war feel. Not even his wives knew (Pino was married twice). Information technology was upon learning about Pine that author Marker Sullivan travelled to Italia and interviewed him. Mr. Lella felt shame for having worn the infamous Nazi symbol in order to spy not realizing the sheer backbone information technology took to have on such a chore.

Sullivan spent ten years on this book, travelling to Italia and Germany multiple times to verify information. Most people and events in this book are real merely due to lack of paperwork and the pass of time, some of the content had to be filled by Sullivan (Sullivan originally wanted this to exist a work of nonfiction). Pino led quite an interesting life following the war. He sold luxury cars in Beverly Hills (and was quite good at driving them also), he became a ski teacher and met James Dean, Gary Cooper and Ernest Hemingway.

His greatest achievement though, is his role as spy in the state of war. His bravery is admirable and he is a true hero. Thanks to Mr. Sullivan for bringing his story to the forefront. Its reported that the picture show rights of the book have been sold with Tom Holland to play the lead. Will exist looking forrad to information technology.
